TUAKAU NOTES.
Musical matters are running smoothly, and quiet work is being done. A shop is beinp; built by Mr Sim next Mr Prescott’s bakery. Good progress is being made by Mr Closey with the new bridge over the creek at the foot of Karrisville Hill, and |the re-grading of the hill is proceeding apace.. On Sunday a scene most amusing to onlookers was in progress all day as numbers of motor cars tried to climb the mud-track caused by the heavy rains on the freshly-graded road, often sliding back fuither than the distance thef had climbed. Houses are being erected as steadily as ever in the district, the latest being nice bungalow residences for Mr Dickens and Mr J. Pirret. The rain has done untold good in this locality, and has even brought on a second growth and bloom of clover. Just previous to the rain a wind had been blowing for some time and had dried the ground arc! burn,t the pastures to such an extent that matters began to look serious but the copious rainfall has set all fears at rest. The orchardists, and there are a number of big places here, were nqt so happy to see the rain, for under the hot muggy conditions lately existing the effect on the ripening fruit was very bad as it fostered and promoted fruit pests, especially the disastrous brown rot. Housewives now purchasing stone fruit should use it the same day, as if left even over one night the brown rot may have worked its evil will on every single specimen in the lot. The Onewhero Athletic Sports, an event of great interest to the whole district were postponed, last Saturday on account of the incessant downpour of rain. They wei’e to have been held on Wednesday last, which, however, was a most unfavourable day. PERSONAL. Miss C. Hillary, who has just arrived back in New Zealand after a three and a half years’ /tour of the world, is on a visit to Tuakau, and is residing there for a short time with her parents. Mr and Mrs Rapson and family have returned to Tuakau after a long holiday at the Bay of Islands. Mrs Lewis and family after spending a most enjoyable month at Russell, have arrived home again. Mr D. H.; MadilUhas returned from a tour of the South Island.
