MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS.
(To the Editor).
Sir, —I desire to Render you my thanks for publishing my letter, of the 21st inst in your issue of Tuesday last. There are, however, some plight errors in reference to the amounts of money recently raised from Government offices at 4% per cent. This is mainly due to your endeavour to correct my own misplacement of figures, which I l,ad explained to you last Monday evening. The loans raised at 4% per cerit. are one of £6OOO for waterworks extension, and one of £SOOO for (drainage. As I have explained £3OOO of the £6OOO loan is already absorbed in repayment of a bank advance to pay for electric cable, and we are under the necessity of uging drainage loan for power planttr and electrical work. When we are able to raise funds specially foil power and lighting the drainage account must be reimbursed. Further refunds for drainage we shall be in receipt of an additional sum of £SOOO in about a year, and of £6OOO for the same work a year later.. In view of this <the surveys, plans, etc., are being completed, and should pipes be obtainable at reasonable cost it is fair to assume that drainage will be an accomplished fact in a little more than (two years. Fortunately, at the meeting of .the Borough Council, held last Monday evening, we were able to .authorise a step forward re the placing of water supply on an assured footing ; and I wish to state plainly that If our critics would only take the trouble to make -themselves acquainted W'i&h the work of the Council it would be found that no opportunity has been lost to make provision for adequate services at the earliest moment possible. The Town Clerk is a particularly couifteous and capable officer, and would be only too willing to explain the position from time fto time to enquirers, and I am always glad to talk matters over with interested parties. Before closing, I again make reference to the condition of the famine stricken in Russia. In Tuesday’s issue you reprint what Major Blake has reported. I desire to see welMo-do people of Pukekohe contributing to the relief of the sufferers. Up to the present a few small subscriptions have been announced in your columns, and the Borough Council has voted £b. Contributions will be forwarded to the Governor-General, who will remit to /the administrator appointed by the British Governments—l am. etc.» JOHN ROUTLY, 25th November, 1921.

Sir, —In regard to the coming Paerata ball, I am also of the opinion that the manner in which these four or five ladies went abouft getting the return social was most unfair, but however it may be more 'for the '.var.t of exeprience as regards getting up socials than that they thought themselves the chosen ones. Had they called a meeting when the lady kindly offered a barn for the occasion, instead of (taking it upon themselves to inspect the barn and decided it would not do_ there would be no illfeeling whatever, but instead they secured' a suitablte building, made all arrangements , and then called a meeting and appointed a secretaty. Now, is that fair to |those who were as anxious to voice tiie<r say in the matter ? And what better way than the print of the act was willfully done. But, however, I woutd like to ask Paerata residents to overtook the occasion for jthe sake oi the returned poU.diers, and give (them us good an evening as they gave us. And then let the men put their heads together where there is no fence and give the ieturned soldiers another rturn ball and set the Indies the examp.e of how to g'/t up a social and to he fair with everyone.-^,
