MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL.
ENGINEER’S REPORT.
The Engineer (Mr W. J. Lopdell) reported 'fas follows at the last meeting of the fManukau County Council.
Mange re Riding.
Owing to the amount of wet weathei during this month, the grader has not been able; to work continuously on the formation of Robertson Road East. The formation is, however, completed as far as the pine., trees, where a deviation from the old road has been decided upon. Messrs. • Sheppard and James have given the land, which will make a much better and straighter road. A seit of 2 feet concrete pipes will be required to replace the existing culvert which is only 18 inches. A start has been made > with * this wofkr which should be completed ih aibqutj a fortnight. The grader has been engaged on several roads in this Riding.
Quarrying.—Good progress is beinig made ft the Springs, where a considerable amount bf stone is now on hand, the face of fstone being much ; better .than where we worked from last season.; : ' General surface work and metalling has been carried out during the month. r 1 ■ * ■’ */■ ‘ 'i y‘\ Wajterwo'rks.—A start ‘has been' made again with the water supply at the crossing end,, and it shouldbe completed in about a month. ;,; ..
Pakuranga Riding.
Foreman McLeod has been engaged during the month on general maintenance and water-tabling on most of the roads in the Riding. .. Pakuranga Public Hall.—/The gorse fence ih froqt of the hall has 'been grubbed out, and the front levelled and metalled’ with scoria.- ; ; • Buckland’s Beach.—The road leading to this beach has been repaired with shell and shingle, using v -180. • cubic yards. yU Ridge Road.—Scoria has been put on this road whenever the lorry was available,,. v r „., , . .~. Howie’s Road.—’Three chains of this road has been metalled with scoria, using 18 yards. . ;
Papakura Riding. „ ‘ i
Brown’s Road —Owing to wet weather during the early part of the month, slow progress was made with the. crushing. The plant is now working, and progress is being made. Findlay and.-. Alexanders Road. —About 8 chains of this road is now completed. Weymouth.—A culvert has been put in at the intersection of the Weymouth and Mjddleton Roads., ..The settlers are prepared to assist with the formation of several chains ot •this road when our foreman and eiader plant are available. . Ranfurlv Road.—The culvert applied for by Mr T. F. Reeve wil be inserted as soon as we can procure and land ,the necessary pipes.
Papatoetoe Riding.
Ridge Road.—The “J” Thornycroft has been engaged hauling scoria for this road, which is in conjunction with the Pakuranga Riding, Tamaki East Metal Reserve.—We have received permission. to start quarrying operations in this reserve, pending the legal formalities. I am preparing a plan for the building of a hopper to hold one day s crushing; this, I hope to erect when the bridge gang complete their present job. - : . Graham’s Road.—Foreman Blank has again resumed the formation work at ,the big filling, after being held up with wet weather. The grader* is engaged m this lading, where it will be working for about a week.
Turanga Riding.
Foreman Page has been engaged durino- the month on general surface workf-patching and wxter-tablimg. Wade Bros, were compelled to cease operations off" <the WhitfordBrookby Road formation, owing to the wet weather. They have, however, made a start agbin, and if the weather holds good should make a good showing during the next few weeks
Wairoa Riding.
Foreman Peterson has resumed work again 'after a few weeks’ illness. Parish Line Bridge is completed, and the gang have left a very fine, little bridge behind them. When t e approaches are finished, and Jie hil re-graded it will greatly improve this road. ' , , ~Q This portion of the road will require metalling during the summer. Wairoa Gorge Road. —The chairman and I inspected jthis road, and found that, the blackberries are very bad in places. The road generally is m fair order, and if three or four days work were spent on it, 'there would not be much to complain about.
General.
Building permits, amounting to £3720, have been issued tor the month of October. The report w’as adopted.
