MANUREWA TOWN BOARD.

MONDAY’S MEETING. The Manurewa Town Boa,rd met on Monday last, when .there were' present : Messrs T. J. Corin (chairman), W. T. Cox, Max D. Kang, Geo. Smith, G. Gallagher, C. H. Lupton, and the clerk (Mr H. Kay). A Request. Mr C. S. McCallum wrote urging (that the roads between Landless’ and Whyte’s properties be cleaned up.— The Works Committee was instructed to inspect and call tenders for the work. Armistice Day. The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, forwarded a circular letter embodying a cablegram received from the Secretary of Stajte to the Colonies expressing the wish of His Majesty the King Ithat on Armistice Day (November 11th) there should be complete silence for a period of two minuses, commencing at 11 a.m., throughout the British Empire. Mr Massey urged that suitable arrangements be made to comply with request in Manurewa. —A notice is to be placed on the notice board requesting the observance of same. Bowling Green. The president of the Manurewa Bowling Club expressed the hope that (the Board would be able to see its, way clear to complete laying down of the Bowling green. He pointed out that the club was purchasing necessary implements to keep the green in order and would not have any funds available to complete the work. The club was raising £IOO to purchase an area of land to lay down a croquet lawn, and intended *to hand the same over to the Board as an area ,to be used for croquet playing. This would obviate the necessity, inconvenience and expense of removing buildings ' from the present proposed croquet site.—lt was pointed out .that the work would be completed by Wednesday next, —The matter was left in the hands, of the Works Committee with full power to act It was pointed out that the cost of constructing the green would probably be £SOO. ' Tarring and Sanding. I : " * j .. ' " ' . j Mr H. M. Smeeton wanted to know if the Board would undertake some tarring and sanding work; on his property on Hill Road, - for which he would defray the cost. —'The matter was left in the hands of the, road foreman to attend to at a convenient ime. ■ c Govrnmeiit Subsidy for South 1 Road. ! • v ;. ~\ . s | • The District Engineer of the Public Works Department wrote with reference to the Government subsidy of £4OO £1 for £l, on ithe portion of the Great South Road passing through ,the town district, and the Board’s engineer’s letter of August 19th re proposed 1 transfer of the vote from formation to metalling. He would be glad if the Board would submit metalling proposals for examination as | early as possible.—-The chairman reported thalt the metalling proposals had been submitted. He understood, jthat there was a reasonable chance of obtaining the subsidy.

Question of Subsidies.

In reply to (the .Board’s letter requesting that certain amounts mentioned (published in the Times) should be re-voted and made available for the current year, the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey) stated he would be glad to take an early opportunity of conferring personally with his colleague, the Minister of Public Works, with a view to seeing whether the Boards’s request could be acceded to. He would reply as soon as he was in a position to do so. —Received.

'Bowling Club.

It was decided, on the motion of Mr King, seconded by Mr Gallagher, that (the Bowling Club be notified that the work on. the bowling green has been completed* - and that the Board expects the club >to undertake ,the. maintenance from now on.

A Straying Horse.

It was reported that a pony had siiayed on *to the bowling green, and had . caused , slight damage. It was decided to notify , the owner that if the pony' continues to wander on to the green he would be held responsible for damage in accordance with the by-laws. 1 Wider Road Suggested. Mr King mov.ed that the owners of property at the corner of-Hill and Great South Roads be interviewed with regard to acquiring a portion of their property at the comer, in order to improve the entrance to Hill Road; that, the chairman, Mr Cox and ,the moyer be a committee tc interview the owners and report at next meeting. Seconded by Mr Gallagher and carried. Vote of Appreciation, Mr M. D. King moved that on his departure from the district the Board expresses its appreciation of the interest always .taken by Mr W. J. Ferguson in, public life and social matters, more especialliy as secretary of the Manurewa Industrial Society, and trusts tha* a period of rest will restore him to health and strength. Mr Lupton seconded, and the mdtion was carried.
