PUKEKOHE EAST TO RAMA RAMA.
VIA KEARN’S HILL. With reference to (the Pukekohe East to Rama Rama road via Kearn’s, which has been before the Council for some (time past, was again under consideration at Thursday’s meeting of the Franiklin County Council. Some time ago ithe Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey) and the Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department promised a grant of about £6OO towards the cost of the work, but in August last the District Engineer of the Department wrote stating that owing to the present financial circumstances he was unable to recommend to the Minister the immediate issue of authority for work or compensation on this road.
The clerk replied stating that the survey plan, was lodged for approval of the chief Surveyor. The settlers were anxious that the work should be put in hand. He requested that the vote be made available so that the work could be done this summery To this the District Engineer replied that the Chief Surveyor had not approved of the land plan and the engineering plans had not been sent in to his office for the formation on the line of deviation. Conditions since the Premier’s letter had altered, * When the acquisition and legalisation of the new road line had been attended to by the Council he would be glad to receive full particulars of the compensation claims, as well as proposals for £h© formation on the new line. The clerk was instructed to fojce the necessary steps .to take the#Vquired land under the Public Wwis Act, and the engineer is to forward proposals for the formation on the r.ew line of road. It was pointed oujt that the reason of the delay was that the District Engineer would not recommend the issue of the authority for the work.
