DISTRICT NEWS.

TUAKAU.

The fair sex have one temperamental advantage over their lords and mastqfs in that they can bring greater forces of enthusiasm and energy to bear upon the achieving of success in anything they undertake than is possible wi|th “mere man,” so that when 'the ladies take in hand any social or public matter, success attends their efforts. This is amplified in the manner in which the ladies of Tuakau are raising fund's for the erection of a Vicarage for St. John’s Church (Anglican), the most pleasing feature being the generous co-opera-tion of the ladies of the other der.cmiriations—long may this spirit last and be reciprocated. On Wednesday afternoon, at the residence of Mr and Mrs C. J. Self, a large number of people gathered fo,r the purpose of securing gifts for the fancy stall at the forthcoming bazaar for the Vicarage Fund. The commodious rooms were, taxed to hold the guests, and a most interesting ,and enjoyable time was spent, the large variety and great value Of the gifts evidencing the pronounced generosity of the donors. Competitions, songs and recitations, and a host of dainty eatables, with Ithe inevitable cup of tea, completed an afternoon that reflected greatcredit upon the ladies responsible for it's organising—Mesdames Self, Roberts, Lapwood, Sumner, and Hillary. The Vicar (Rev. Bidwell) was present, and took encouragement and good promise for the future from jthe spirit and sympathy emanating from all present, and manifested in their cordial co-operation. A sum of £4 in cash was contributed during the function.

MANUREWA.

ORPHAN HOME CONCERT.

On Wednesday evening, 28th September a very successful, concert was held in the Manurewa Picture Theatre in aid of the Isolation Block to be added to the Orphan’s Home. Mr C. H. Lupton occupied the chair, and in a few well-chosen and 'timely remarks outlined the object ill view. 1 The attendance was a record and the performance by hec hildren reflected’ the greatest credit on their training by the Matron (Miss Marks), and her staff. The proceeds, which amounted to some £2O, are to be devoted towards helping to furnish the new building. The concert items wc-e excellent throughout, practically all being encored.

MARAMARUA.

DISPUTE OVER A SCHOOL SITE.

There has been a great deal of excitement in this district this past week or two in regard to shifting the school to a more central position. Some three years ago there were two half-time schools started, known as.Maramarua and Maramarua East. At that k time there were nineteen children going to the Maramarua East school and' only five going to the Maramarua school. Then it was suggested by some of the East people that the Maramarua school should be shifted or make the Maramarua East school full time, but when the people at the Maramarua end and close to the school heard of the suggestion they were up in arms at once, although 'there were many of them whoohad no children to go to school:. Then the fun began. The members of the school committee who were in office then were in favour of the full-time school or the Maramarua school being shifted, except the secretary, and he did nnit mind the full-time school part of the business, but he would not have the Maramarua school shifted at any cost. The secretary (Mr A. McTnnest was asked by the chairman (Mr W. Steen) to write to the Education Board and find out horn many children were requiredl to get a full-time school, but he refused to do so. and the chairman had to write to the Board on the matter. All this time the Maramarua people were waiting to fight the matter at the annual householders’ meeting, and at that meeting three of the, members were defeated ancf three new members from the Maramarua end took their olaces. Of course these new members had no families, but although the retiring members wre defeated, they did not give up the fight. The ex-chairman then wrote to the Board of Education nnd asked the Board to send their advisory inspector to the district to see if the school should be shifted. The Board sent the inspector (Mr D. W. Dunlop) and he was met by the chairman and members of the committee and also by 'the ex-chairman and some of the householders. After going into the matter very carefully, Mr Dunlop pii(t in a report to the Board of Education that the school should be shifted. Then 'the other people at the Maramarua end of the district sent for ithe senior insnector (Mr Gerrard) to report against Mr Dunlop’s reoort, which he did. Then tfie ex-members got in a white heat over this, and asked the Board to send two of their members up to the district, and Messrs Boddie and Burns came, and went into the mattor and reported' that the school should be shifted. So now the fait is in the fire. The only thing to decide now is on a site, and that is in the hands of Mr D. W. Dunlop. The people that have objected to the school being shifted have no families at all. It seems to have been a matter of the property-holders up against 'the parents of the children. LOCAL ocks, rble
