LABOUR OUTLOOK GLOOMY. IN THE UNITED STATES. IMPROVEMENT IN MONETARY CONDITIONS. In a letter dated from New York, Mr W. Goodfellow, managing director of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, remarks thp.t in the States the company’s Anchor Brand butter has quite a good reputation, and is well-known to the large buyers. Referring to general conditions in the States, he s&ys the railway returns show an improvement, and the general tone is slightly more optimistic, though so far as unemployment is concerned —and there are 6,000,000 unemployed in the States—things look very blue for the coming winter unless manufacturing increases and some olJ;he surplus labour is thus employed. In a further letter from Montreal, Mx Goodfellow states that money is very tight everywhere, and! financing difficult in both Canada and the United States. ,< Bankers informed him, however, that there were already signs of improved monetary conditions, although they anticipated it would be years before trade and commerce would be anything like normal.*,
