PINE TREES AT PATUMAHOE

Last Saturday evening the friends of Mr and Mrs Howard, old and respected residents of over a quarter of a century, gathered to pay their respects, and at the same time to make ut an occasion of a house warmer . , From 7 p.m<the guests began to gather per motor car, horses, foot, etc Mr Howard being well-known as “Mayor of Patumahoe,” and respected by old and young, far and wide, for his sterling qualities. Mr Howard, in welcoming the guests, referred to absent friends, and those who laid down their lives for their country, and asked those present to stand and drink in silence to those who will never return. He then asked all present to drink the health of all frineds in bumpers of Devonshire cider, a consig«| ment of which he had received by the Niagara , in which a relative in Mr Howe, returned by the same ship, After cordial relations had been expressed all round, everyone laid themselves out to have a good time. Cards and music found most favour. An enjoyable musical programme was also appreciated by all. Items weie given ras follows :—Song, “My Old Skako,” T. B. Bailing; song, “Swanee,.” J. O’Malley; musical monologue, “Hits” (local), S. Fleming; song, Mqther Machrie,” Miss Walker, duet, “Who killed Cock Robin,” Messrs Howard and Fleming; rag- “ Stuff Speciality,” by old ebums. The evening finished before midnight with the old favourite “Old Lang Syne,” and “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” including Mrs Howard and family. Add District news '
