THE TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

AND TRAVELLING ALLOWANCE.

Recently complaints were received from several parents of pupils attending the Pukekohe Technical High School regarding the non-pay-ment of travelling allowance. The Advisory Committee had the matter looked into and at Tuesday’s meeting a copy of a letter received by the Auckland Education Board from the Director of Education was read. Inter alia, it stated: “I regret to have to inform you that in the absence of any provision for the grant of conveyance allowance to pupils, other than those attending public schools, including the secondary departments of district high schools,* it is not possible to approve of the continuance to Miss Harvey as a pupil of the Pukekohe Technical High School, of the allowanace she has hitherto received as a pupil of the District High School. The question of an extension of the concession of conveyance and board allowance, has been considered; but has bad to be declined on the score of the very large additional expenditure that such an extension of the system would involve. That it is necessary in Miss Marvey’s case to withdraw a concession hitherto allowed is regretted, but, as has just been pointed out, it is not within the discretion of the Department to grant in any individual case a concession which is denied in general to pupils attending Technical High Schools.” A.

Members took exception to the attitude, of the Department. According to the -prospectus issued by the Manual and Technical Advisor, Mr J. P. Kalaugher, travelling allowances are available for pupils living at a distance who are obliged to make use of a horse or motor vehicle in order to attend ’ the Pukekohe Technical High School. It was pointed out that the regulations provide for District High Schools and not Technical High Schools. The matter was discussed at length and it was decided, on the motidn of Messrs Patterson and Wyatt, that the matter be referred to the Director of Technical Education.
