At Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council, Cr. A. P. Daysh, chairman of the Works Committee* reported that the estimated cost to tar macadam the road from the railway .bridge to the Courthouse, 6ha chains, and Horn King Street to Harrington Avenue, sha chains, would approximately £675 12s. It seems clear that the Dairy Division is determined to strictly maintain the value of semi-official record testing, for in the case of the dairy fai’mer mentioned in last issue of having not honestly given the correct record, the Department refused to grant him a certificate and also refused to test any more of his cows.

A slight error crept into the paragraph which appeared in our last issue, in reference to the feat performed by an Oldsmobile car recently. We stated that it cost the car owner £2 2s for the advice of a motor mechanic. We have been informed that the fee was only 10s, so we make tnis correction in fairness to the mechanic. The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., publish the balance sheet of the British Dominions Insurance Company, and we draw attentention to same on another page. The Company is a particularly strong one, with a very large invested capital, and a considerable portion of the funds are invested in New Zealand securities. All the income obtained in the Dominion is retained here, and this is certainly a wise policy to adopt. As the name indicates, this company is all British, and in the Dominion its operations have been glowing steadily during the past few years. '"’The year just closed has been a most successful one, and shows the company firmly established in every department. The dangerous nature of the road leading to the railway station was. again brought under the Council’s, notice by Cr. Patterson at Monday’s meeting of the Borough Council. He suggested asking the Railway Department to indemnify the Council to the extent of the cost of the land, if the Council took the necessary land under the Public Works Act, and made the road a public one. By the Council taking action it could take advantage of the betterment clause in the Act, and would be cheaper to the Government. It was resolved to bring the matter under the notice of/ the "Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, when he returned to New Zealand. i
