TARRING MANGERE ROADS.
RATEPAYERS DISSATISFIED. EXCESSIVE EXPENDITURE ALLEGED. ENGINEER’S REPORT CONSIDERED. Another meeting of members of the Mangere Ratepayers’ Association was held on Tuesday evening, August 16, at the Mangere Public Hall, to further consider matters relative to the tarred roads scheme and the loan approved recently by ratepayers of the district. Mr J. Montgomerie presided over a large attendance. The report of Mr W. Lopdell, the County Engineer, on the tarred roads scheme, was considered and criticised by the chiarman. He said that according to the report the first portion of the work was being done at a cost of £7OOO per mile, ancl he pointed out that the loan of £30,000, that had been sanctioned, was the estimater cost of tarring twentyeight miles of road in the district of Mangere. Other members expressed thenviews, and, as the outcome of a long discussion of the various points at issue, the meeting decided to protest against the action of the Manukau County Council inp remitting the engineer to depart from the specifications that had been laid down, ancl it was alleged that an excessive proportion of the loan money had been spent on 71 chains of the road. Lurther, it was resolved toask the Council to inquire into the' whole position and also to postpone the remainder of the work until a more favourabli time. With a view' to supporting the protest, it was decided that a deputation wait upon the County Council at its next meeting', and representatives were appointed for that purpose, and to consider an umber , of other important questions affecting the district of Mangere as a whole.
