MANGERE BRIDGE APPROACHES.
AMA&SIB BY GALES AND HIGH TIDES. The recent gales and high tides rused considerable damage to the aproaches and breastwork at the Manure Bridge. The matter was refer:d to at Tuesday’s meeting of the amikau County Council, when the iglneer, Mr. W. J. Lopdell, reported ; follows: —On the Bth Inst., I was tirunoried by Cr. House to inspect •e approaches to the above-named -idge. I find that the effect of the cent gales and high tides have ayed havoc on the breastwork. On te western side at the Mangere end, ,e store facing has a reasonable batr, and with cement grouting, proibly would have withstood the i'ects of exceptionally heavy seas. ie water has washed up over the one facing on to the road, and in s backward wash, has carried out uch of the filling, with the result -t the wall is collapsing. On the stjgrn side the stone facing is much eeper and has suffered accordingly, pec OUT on the Onehunga end where e wail is much higher. To repitch is v/aIL and give it a greaterb atter juid be a very costly piece of work, it would be a sure and safe course adopt. To reinstate the wall and v q ft a heavy cement grouting may ova finite. satisfactory and would be ach cheaper. It is a matter which .mires very careful consideration, there is the cost and efficiency of work involved. It is work that mires early consideration, and tins ief report*is only for the purpose bringing the matter before your uncil, but in no degree does it oute any oolicy until more mature coneration is given to it.—lt was inted cut that there was a balance £586 to the credit of the Mangere dge loan, and it*was resolved to oend the money in effecting repairs.
