“A MISERABLE SERVICE.”

LATE RUNNING SCHOOL TRAIN.

ACTION TO BE TAKEN.

At the meeting of the Tuakau Town Board held last Tuesday evening a letter was. received from Mr John Naylo< / of Whangarata, re the late running of the school train. Mr Naylor wrote to the board asking for interest and endeavour in securing an alteration to the running of what is known as the school train from Mercer to Pukekohe and vice versa. The train is timed to leave Pukekohe at 3.55 but often it is nearly 5 pm. and then does a considerable amount of shunting at Buckland and Tuakau, the children not arriving at Whangarata till 6 p.m.--Two hours for a journey of seven miles. Chib dren have to leave their homes soon after 6 a.m. and arrive back home at 6 p.m., then have two hours home work. Children were being debarred from attending the High School solely on account of the train service. ~

The chairman said everything Mr Naylor said in the letter was quite true. The train arrangements were very unsatisfactory. He himself had to stop sending his son to the school during the winter over the same thing. Mr Taylor moved that a strong deputation of people from Mercer to Papakura wait upon the traffic manager. 'Mr Sims, in seconding, said the position was likely to get worse, as s'eme goods trains had been cut out. The facilities were wretched and there was undoubted cause for alarm. The motion was carried.
