. v. v GAME AT REMOERA,. ) FRANKLIN UNSUCCESSFUL. Franklin gave a very creditable display against Rodney at Remuera last week, though the absence of three men imposed an insuperable handicap which profoundly influenced the result. The full backs were up against a difficult proposition when they had the full force of the northern forwards against them, and as the weakness necessarily Took place in the forwards this was frequently the case. But they ‘responded well, and the soundness of the play is reflected in the scores, Rodney netting only five. Yet occasionally the forwards broke away and the backs were temporarily relieved when play centred around the opponents’ goal, Franklin attacked from the bully and carried play to the Rodney 25, where the backs cleared had brought back, Goertz scoring the first goal. Morrison found the net shortly * afterwards but, owing to an offside ruling by the umpire, the score was not allowed. Franklin forwards then broke through and carried the leather with them right to the Rodney circle. Here R. Civil' figured prominent in the defence, and he got the ball clear, setting his forwards in motion once more. Then they maintained play around the Franklin goal, trying unsuccessfully for the net several times. Eventually the position was relieved again, but Croker proved a bulwark of defence among the Rodney backs. Franklin resisted another rush, no less safely than before, and play went back to \the Rodney 25 for a considerable time. Shortly before half-time Pcwdrill scored another goal for Rodney. At the beginning of the second spell Conroy got free and, with the other Franklin forwards, he kept the Rodney men busy on the defensive. Several times shots were made for the net, but the efforts did, not meet with success, and the whites retaliated by forcing them bask into their own territory, where O. Civil hit into centre, where Davis- lost no time in scoring. O Civil scored an o-ther goal and almost immediately, R. Powdrill netted the fifth. No further changes in -the scores were registered when time was called. Result: Rodney 5, 'Franklin.o. rM L. H. Norton was referee. TAURANGA V. FRANKLIN. Franklin backs were the strong point of the representative team when it met Tauranga on Wednesday at the, Remuera No. 2 ground. Tauranga were generally superior, but during the first half they did ont score although Ipay frequently centred around the Franklin goal. Defer. sive work, which at times became particularly bright,' was largely responsible for failure to score, though it was apparent that in several, cases th sehoits lacked precision and finish. Tauranga attacked strongly again on resumption of play after the interval, and. a sound attack gave an opening to F. Simmonds. McDonald noticing this centred to him and he netted quickly and cleanly'. ! Franklin forwards brought relief to the back lilies by carrying into Tauranga territory, but the latter resisted strongly and eventually retaliated by carrying through to the circle where F. Simmonds added another. Franklin had no respite, the others coming on with sustained vigour in another effort to score, which resulted in H. Simmonds centring to F. Simmonds, who added Tauranga’s third and last goal. Tauranga 3, Franklin 0. Mr R. Brown was referee.
