IMPROVED POSTAL FACILITIES.
REQUEST FROM EAST TAMIKIr
THE MINISTER’S REPLY,
EFFECT OF FINANCIAL STRINGENCY.
For some time past the residents o r East Tamaki have felt th'b need of more adequate postal accommodation. ,to meet the increasing demands of the rising district, and to give effect to their desires a deputation waited upon the Postmaster-General (the Hon. J. -C Coates) on Monday. .
The deputation was introduced by Sir Frederick Lang, member for the district and Speaker of the House, and it was stated that the present building was no more than &. , “shanty,” being- only one room of dimensions 10ft x 10ft., To provide for the erection of a new building a suitable one had been purchased. Ir; reply the Minister said : “There v is absolutely no hope at all of erecting a new post office at the present! time. Even if the present building is a “shanty” it Will have to remain a “shanty.” In view of the financial position I am unable to consider the request. The deputation also mentioned the matter of telephones, and their requests -in this connection were answered by the telegraph officials, who were present They said that the work of installing party lines in the district would be commenced as soon as possible. When that would be they could not yet say.
