Desiring inforamtion on the subject of the establishing of meatflour works in New Zealand, as to which they had been in receipt of several circulars, the Hawke’s Bay executive of the Farmers’ Union recently communicated with the Minister of Agriculture. At a meeting of the executive held in Hastings ccvitly. a letter from the Minister was read., He said there was a proposal to establish works at Raetihi, Waimarino, but owing to existing conditions it had been abandoned for the present. He presumed the idea was to prepare the ni-eat+flour much in the same manner as it was done in America. The meat was first subjected to a process for obtaining extract of meat, the meat that was left over being dried and ground into a powder. The feeding value oi this could only be determined by anaylsis, which hack not been made, but as much of the nutriment would be taken out in the process of obtaining extract of meat the meat left over would not, he thought,, be of very high feeding vaiul. He had no means of ascertaining the probable demand for it on its market value. If a sample was submitted he would have it analysed and reported on.
