MAUKU. The next meeting * of the Mauku Farmers’ Union will take place in the Paiumahoe Hal!- on Monday evening at 7.30, when matters of importance to the district will be discussed. A' public meeting to consider a proposal to extend the Tuakau Town Board’s grea, so as to include the .Tuakau' Domain, will be lieM in the Tuakau Hall on Wednesday next at 2.50 p.m. 'As the matter is of great importance every person interested is requested to attend. pl BUCKLAWD. A social and dance will be held in Backhand Hall on Wednesday next, when a presentation will be made to Mr and Mrs Carter, who are leaving the district, and a presentation to Mr and Mrs W. Jefferies PAERATA. .
■On Wednesday last at about 3.45 a.rn. a fire (which might easily have proved fatal) was discovered at the residence of Mr R. Adams, Paerata. The discovery was made by the enginedr.ver of one of the night trains, who communicated with the porter on duty at the station. This man immediately took steps to arouse the occupants who had, fortunately been awakened in the meantime by the sound ox falling pictures. Mr Adams promptly removed his family out of the danger zone and set to work with a bucket on to the burning limber and finally his efforts were crowned with success. Had the outbreak got beyond control the loss must have been a severe one to Mr Adams who, unfortunately, is not covered by insurance The railway officials are to be cotig ■■:-tulated on their prompt a.ction in connection with the warning of the family in question.
