j FRANKLIN RUGBY UNION COMPETITIONS. , SATURDAY’S MATCHES. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Senior—Pukekohe 0 v. Patumahoe 0. Tuakau 8 v. Onewhero 8. - Junior—Pukekohe 34 v. Patumahoe 0. Tuakau forfeited to Onewhero. .TWO DRAWN GAMES. • The Franklin Rugby Union’s competitions were advanced a further stage on Saturday in dull weather. Two drawn games resulted in the senior competition, Patumahoe drew with Pukekohe and Tuakau with Onewhero. In the junior grade, Tuakau forfeited to Onewhero while Pukekohe registered a cricket score against Patumahoe. SENIOR. ( PUKEKOHE V. PATUMAHOE. The above teams met at Patumahoe in the presence of a fairly large crowd of spectators. The home team was considerably strengthened by the of T. Conroy (Glenbrook) and Adams (Aka Aka). Undoubtedly it was one of the finest exhibitions of Rugby seen this season, both sets of backs being seen to advantage. They threw the ball about to some tune, but the tackling was deadly and scores were prevented. The home forwards were too good for the visitors, and it is in. this department that Pukekohe fails. The forwards, although they hooked the ball from the scrums repeatedly, would not follow up (the. same thing has been witnessed throughout* the season), and consequently' do not assist the backs sufficiently. They will have to show an improvement if they expect to defeat Onewhero next Saturday. Saturday’s game was very even indeed. Patumahoe showed a decided \ Approvement in all departments or the game,;, ancl will be very hard to dispose of in. t><e Challenge Shield matches. They deserve congratulations for, stticking to their guns, although they have not yet won a game this season, and running 'the leading team in. the competition so closely. . V Next season Patumahoe should be a very hard nut to crack. Saturday’s game resulted in a scoreless draw, i
Mr R. J. Glasgow proved an excellent and impartial referee.
TUAKAU 8 V. ONEWHERO 8.
The Tuakau-Onewhero match ended in ft” draw, each side registering 8 points. The Tuakau team was a very weak one, Leighton, Dromgool, Bros., and Smeed Bros, not being available. Their places were filled with juniors (Somerville, M c ß ean > 'Smeed Bros, and a native),. These boys all played splendidly, and Tuakau had Onewhero busily defending. Cruickshank played a sterling game, and scored a brilliant try, which was converted. Somerville kicked, a goal. The names of Onewhero scorers are not available. Mr W. J. Taylor proved a capable referee. • THE JUNIOR MATCHES. A RUNAWAY VICTORY. * ' PUKEKOHE 34 V. PATUMAHOE 0. Patumahoe juniors came to _ Pukekohe with an improved team and were confident of extending the home fifteen. As the teams lined out, tiie visitors took the eye as a iikely lot. They won the toss and Pukekohe set the oval in motion, and at once took piay to Patumahoe territory cpmpeiiing the greens to force three times in rapid succession. The visitors took a liana at attacking and transferred, the scene of operations to Pukekohe’s 25 and compeitea the reds to force, Piay hovered near half way for a time until Patumahoe set up a rush which was stopped by Les Hart. This, player cleverly cut in and went up the field. He passed to Jim Adams who raced across. The kick faiied; Pukekohe .. £ Patumahoe .. .. h The second quarter was fairly even until near the end when Pieydell notched a try from a forward rush. N, Blake faiied with an easy kick.
