ROAD WORKS IN FRANKLIN.

COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT.

i At Thursday’s meeting of the Franklin County Council,- the engineer, Mr J. F. McArthur, reported as follows:

Government Grants and Subsidies. — In connection with deferred subsidies on loan and other expenditure, the Pulbic Works Department has been requested to approve of -proposals submitted and issue certificates to the Council as the works are completed. A number of proposals have already been submitted for approval and proposals for other important works are. being prepared and will be submitted at an early date

, As requested by the Public Works Department an application has been made for grants and subsidies to be placed on the 1921-1922 estimates. This -ificludes £1 for £1 subsidies on ail existing loans in the county, and for other important works. The list of subsidies applied for includes -88 items amounting'to £40,327. During the month claims for payments on : works carried out under Governmet money have been sent in, and the works inspected by an engineer of the Public Works Department. In each instance the work has been approved and the claims recommended for payment. The money applied for amounts to £2284 14s lOd. Mercer Quarry.—A commencement has been made in connection with the proposed scheme for the development of the Mercey Quarry. I expect to be in a position to report fully at the next meeting of your Council on the matter and give details as to s cost, etc,. Advertitsed Contracts^ —Contracts were advertised for road works returnable on Saturday, June 25, for contract No. 449 for the supply and delivery of 300 cubic yards of spawls on the Drury-Tuakau main road, at Harrisville. A tender was received from Mr A. Mcßobbie, the price being 11s 6d per cubic yard. Tender not accepted. Tenders are invited, returnable on Tuesday, July 12, f6r the following contracts:—No. 510, quarrying, s?;awling and stacking 2000 cubic yards of stone at McLaughlin’s quarry, N. oil, conveying 2000 yards of stone from McLaughlin’s quarry, Wiri, to Glasson’s Landing, Karaka; No. 512, quarrying, spawling and stacking 1000 cubic yards of stone at Karaka quarry, Karaka; Nos. 510 and 511 were* shown to intending tenderers oh Friday, Ist inst. A good number of contractors were present. Tenders to be considered by respective riding members and engineer. ,

Final Payments on Contracts. —No. 416, supply and delivery of spawls at Patumahoe, V. Elder; No. 467, forming and culvertintg first section to Helvetia Road, Helvetia Estate, A. J. Moore: No. 473. forming and culverting second section of Helvetia Road, Helvetia Estate, A. J. Moore; No. 475, forming and culverting second section of Ostrich Road, Helvetia Estate, T. M. Short; No. 476, quarrying and spawling stone at Murphy’s quarry, Pura Pura, J. Fraser; No. 477 a, carting and stacking stone, Pukekobe-Aka Aka Road, J. Fraser; No. 482, forming and culverting Lee’s Gully to Pollok Road, H. Ashworth and E. Westbead; No. 485, forming and culverting Waipipi to Kohekohe main road, M. J. Gleeson; No. 486, supply and delivery of sea shell for Waipipi to Kohekohe main road, Short and Eisenhut; No. 487, forming portion of Pollok post office to Wharf Road, R. J. McPike; supply and delivery of spawls, Hunua Road at Kirikiri, Jas. Walker,, jun„; No. 368, supply, delivery and stacking of stone at Costello’s Road, Patumahoe, J.. Brady: No. 505 a, erection of building in county yard, F. Blandford; No. 471, forming and culverting two portions of Whiri Whiri Road. E. Holmes; No. 424, supply, delivery and stacking of stone on Ramarama to Ararimu Road, Jackson, Gill and Price; No. 415, forming and culverting Taurangaruru to Waipipi main road, E. Holmes.

Re Deviation Waiuku-Drury Road at Subway.—The Railway Department has been communicated with regarding the metalling of above deviation, This deviation was put in by the department, which replaced a properly metalled portion of the Waiuku-Drury Road. Scoria only has been placed on the deviation, being quite unsuitable for main road traffic. The Department now states that the matter of metalling the deviation as requested is receiving consideration.

Crushing Plants^ —The No. 1 portable crushing plant, is at present engaged crushing stone at Urquhart’s Quarry, Patumahoe. This stone is for metalling a portion of Waiuku-Drury Road under the Waiuku-Karaka loan. The No. 2 plant is crushing on the Pukekohe to Aka Aka road and is during the present week proceeding to Waiuku to crush stone for the Waiau-Papakura Road. , The No. 2 plant is forming TJrquhart’s Road, Karaka. The works on which these plants are engaged wifi come under the expenditure of special loans.

Thorneycroft Motor Trucks. —The services of three of the motor dlivers have been dispensed with, it being found impossible to keep the trucks employed during the winter months. Two of the trucks are being used occasionally for road repairs in different parts of the county. The report was adopted,,
