RECORD JERSEY HALE.

HIGH-PRICED HEIFER, 400 GNS.

At the dispersal sale of the “Goodwood” Jersey herd, held by the Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering Co., Ltd.* at Fencourt, Cambridge, on Wednesday, June 29, a new level of prices for pedigree jersey cattle in Australasia was marked. The result also constituted a record for the Dominion both for highest priced cows and average —that is for cows, calves and bulls. The highest priced animal was lot 44 Viola’s Golden Fern, 10532, N.Z.J.H.8., a 2-year-old heifer, purchased for 400gns by Ml- Richard Cobb, Feuding The 65 females submitted realised £9158 Bs, an average of £l4O 18s. Nine bulls realised £1197, an average of £133. The average of the complete offering of 74 animals was a fraction short 0f,£140.

It is interesting to note that 300 g-ns was paid for a 20-months heifem 230gns for a heifer ca\f, 300gns, for an aged bull, SOOgns for an 18-months old bull, and 375gns for a 4-year-old heifer, and these were each records for their respective ages, not only for New Zealand, but also for Australasia. : / The owner, Mr E. Griffiths, who is vice-president of the New Zealand Jersey Breeder’s has been very enterprising in making importations, both from Jersey Island and America, and it was the progeny of these importations, but bred by Mr Griffiths himself, which made such wonderful prices.

The sale was conducted on model lines, and commenced with a parade of stock sired by the imported Jr# fine animal headed the parade. The sale itself was held in a large marquee, the seating accommodation rising in tiers, giving it the appearance of an amphitheatre. Over 300 were present, representing buyers from all parts of the Dominion, as well as Australia.

Bidding was brisk throughout and the sale was completed in four hours’ time.

The stud bull, Viola’s Golden Laddie (imp.), although eight years old, sold, for 300gns. The buyer, Mr G. N. Bell, of New Plymouth, has only a small herd.

The progeny of this bull was keenly competed fbr, and the&top prices for the other animals were:—Four-year-old heifer Viola's Golden Girl } R. C. Wilson, Putaruru, 195gns.; 4-year-old heifer Viola’s Golden Mercedes* W. H. Miers,, Hamilton, 375gn5.; 3-year-old heifer Viola’s Daisy Girl, W. H. Fitness, Wairoa, 190gns.; 2-year-old heifer Viola's Golden Fern, R. Cobbe, Feilding, 400gns-; 2-year-old heifer Mercedes Lady Biola, H. C. Sampson, New Plymouth, 200gns.; 2-year-old heifer Viola’s Queen Bess, R- Cobbe, Feilding, 250gns.; 20-months heifer Viola’s Mystery, 300gns.; 20-months heifer Viola’s Golden Princess, R. Cornwall, New Plymouth, 19Qgns., yearling heifer Viola’s Lady Mercedes, H. Sampson, New Plymouth, 230gns.; 18-months-old bull Mercedes Noble Laddie, Smith Bros. Hairini, SOOgns.

Other outstanding prices were: Seven-year-old test cow Ladj Peggy, E. W. Knowles, Hawera, 230gns; her 4-year-old daughter Lady Bilberry, A. E. Western,, Hawera, 150gns.; her 3-year-old grand-daughter Lady Morecraft, J. Brock, Te Roti, 200gns.; the imported 7-year-old cow Golden Fern’s Maid, W, J. Chynoweth, Tamahere, 200gns*: the 8-year-old sow Mercedes Lady, by K.C.8., dam Mercedes Noble Queen (imp.), W. J. Chynoweth, 350gns.; 2-year-old heifer Waimana’s Majestic Duke, by Majestic Duke, 210gns.; 20-months-old bull Mercedes Prince, a grandson of Viola’s Golden Laddie, A Christie, 200
