ROAD REPAIRING EXTRAORDINARY.
_ —— ■ Yesterday a. deputation / of citizens brought into the Times Office a piece of scoria metal 16h>in long by 9in wide, by styin thick, and averred that they had picked it up from among hundreds of similar sized pieces being used in the repairing of Manukau Read, they claimed that this repair work is the most extraordinary that they have ever seen, comprising as it does, huge pieces of the size stated above. To strike one of these with a car means something and the deputation claimed that the procedure being followed was merely a waste of good money. One citizen also urged that West Street contained a. lot of big unwieldly metal which would never settle down. Now, the Times does not claim to dictate how roads should be made, but ifx does claim in the interests of ratepayers, to be concerned as to whether the money invested in repair work is being spent to the best advantage. The deputation referred to claims it is not on Manukau Road and West Street, and it is, therefore, the duty of the responsible officials to either prove that metal of the above size is suitable or explain the reason for permitting its use.
