A liquid manure tank is a necessary arrangement on a farm where stock are housed. The drainage from cowhouse and istable can be discharged into the tank and so can be prevented from running to waste. Leakage from manure heaps is also worth collecting, and the wasteful course of allowing it to trickle away into ditches should on no account be followed. The Canadian Government tackles the noxious weeds problem in a thorough manner. When the last mail left what is known as the interprovincial weed train was being organised for a six weeks’ tour of the three prairie provinces. This was to carry a staff of experts, who, by means of lectures and demonstrations, would make plain to farmers the menace of vegetable pests, and advise on the best methods of combating same. Having prepared the seed bed, a great point in swede culture is to secure favourable climatic conditions if possible for sowing. Showery weather is best for swede drilling, provided, of course, the drill will work, because it is in these circumstances that the seeds germinate quickly and the little plants develop rapidly from the seed leaf to the rough-leaf stage, when the turnip flea ceases to do much damage. “Get the efficiency habit.”—Abbott.
