BEAUTIFYING PUKEKOHE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —The Borough Council had the honour of a visit from Mr Fattle on Monday evening last, his object being to impress the Council with the proposals which he had previously introduced in the columns of the “Times/' A sympathetic hearing was accorded to the visitor, and it is hoped that he will receive a good backing and prove a good leader for the projects he has brought forward. I am inclined to agree with Mr Allan as to the advisability of getting to work on one of the schemes first, and if success and enthusiasm prevail then take another in hand. There is plenty of room for improvement in Pukekohe in the way of being mere natty. The Borough Council is not setting a good example. Some little time since notices were sent out to occupiers of property re cutting blackberries. The Council’s men cut the Council’s blackberries on the road sides bordering the Domain, and the trimmings are lying about and the grass and weeds growing up amongst them. The Council should take a lead in being tidy. A Beautifying Society will have accomplish very good work when it has helped residents to take a pride in keeping their properties clean and trim. As far as T can udge, there is

plenty of progressive work to do. We have a Domain, a Roulston Memorial Park a considerable area of school grounds, and we are acquiring a large area for scenic reserve. A society that will devote a good share of its energies to working with the School Boards and Borough Council for the beautifying of these proper1i will fill n useful purpose. So I Dust that Mr Battle will get to work, following the rule of one task nr, n time, and that done well, and that he wfil have numerous skilled arid active helpers. I am. etc.., JOHN ROUTLY.
