SALE OF ARMOUR.

A unique collection of armour will be sold at auction at Sotheby’s on June 23. The Earl of Pembroke's collection from Wilton House is probably the- first collection of its kind to be placed on the market as a whole in many years. It represents no effort at a modern collection, but consists of the purchases by •'ctual fighting noblemen of past centuries for their own use and that of retainers.. The collection was gathered at Wilton House during the fifteeenth and sixteenth centuries, and has remained there. The sale recalls an attempt four years ago to sell two suits of Pembroke armour representing the first Earl's spoils front the battle of St. Quentin in 1557, the armour belonging to Anne de Montmorency, constable of France, and the Due de Montpensier. The sale aroused a great deal of interest among authorities on armour and a keen competition among the bidders, but the armour was finally withdrawn at £25,000, .
