MILKING SHORTHORN BREEDERS.
MEETING OF FRANKLIN BRANCH. A meeting of the New Zealand Milking Short ho gi Breeders' Association Franklin branch) was held in the A. and P. Society’s rooms on Saturday afternoon last. There was a very good attendance, presided over by Mr Horne (president of the Franklin branch). The chairman outlined the, business of the deputation which waited upon the President of the N.Z..M.5., at the Auckland Show in connection with registration. Nothing definite /was arranged then, but as an outcome of later conferences, Franklin was now possessed of a fully fledged N.Z.M.S. Assn. Branch.
The meeting held here on Saturday was to decide the advisabilitj r of holding an annual pedigree sale . Regarding a combined sale, Mr Horne stated the Jersey breeders had withdrawn and would hold a sale of their own. He regretted that they had clone this, but it would be a pity for the Shorthorn breeders to abandon an annual sale.
Mr C. J- Hosking said that the annual sale should certainly be held and other breeders outside Jerseys, should be asked to combine.
Other speakers concurred' with this view.
The chairman said the seceding of the Jersey breeders was a national and blind loss. However, the Shorthorn breeders should not let that hinder them holding an annual combined sale.
It was decided to send a circular to breeders asking what support will be forthcoming. Replies will be in by July 7 and a meeting will be held on the 9th to arrange details for the sale. No less than 46 cattle for the sale were promised in the room. One speaker urged the necessity of putting cows on test so that breeders and buyers would know what the milking Shorthorns were doing. It was also agreed to donate five guineas to the highest butter-fat test in her class for any cow held by members of the Franklin foronch. The Government basis to he taken as standard. The date of termination of the test to be December 31. 1922. In concluding the meeting, Mr Horne said it was gratifying To see such a large and representative gathering. It certainly augured well for the future of the milking Shorthorn breeders of this district.
