IMPROVING OUR TOWN.
(To the Editor.) Sir—Mr Pattle’s letter in your last issue and your remarks, concerning it are matters for congratulation, for they are calculated to set going a movement which will fill a distinct gap in and about Pukekohe, a gap which impresses strangers rather painfully. There is no doubt that in this district Nature has been exceptionally kind to us. Most strangers that come heye tell us that there is no other district in our country that can rival ours in loveliness and charm. We have undoubtedly developed the fertility of the soil, and can with reason be proud of the productiveness, of the district. But although we must not ignore the material basis of life, it is time to remember that man does not live by bread alone and to understand that unless we appreciate and develop the beauty of cur surroundings we remain in a very real sense much poorer than we ought to be, Some such movement as Mr Rattle outlines in his letter may make a difference to us and our district, the, fid! effect of which may not at first oe imagined. This movement necessarily involves the people working together for the common good, and their rivalries being directed towards the common good, and will develop a pride in the district which agam - will tend to develop a spirit of unity and progress. It is a movement worthy of tjie enthusiastic support of every coe who, looks upon . this district as bis home —I am, etc., ; ’ H, G, R. MASON.
