BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr J. Routly), Crs D. R. Hamilton, Cr. H. Armstrong, A. P. Daysh, R. H. Me Gough, J. Patterson. F. J. Morrow, J. Kennedy, T. Brownlee, the town clerk (Mr J. F. Deane) and the foreman (Mr S. Clews). Re Term of £34,000 Lean.

Tlie Finance Committee reported that it was advisable that authority be obtained from the ratepayers to borrow £30,000 of the sum authorised for a loan of 36 )£ years, provided that such authority did not cancel the authority to borrow for ten years or that the loss of the proposal to borrow for 36 x /» years did not cancel the present authority. Legal advice is to be obtained'm the matter.—■ It was pointed cut that the money was for drainage purposes. Cr Daysh said that the roads should be provided for. Electric light and waterworks should not take preference to roads, which were in a deplorable condition .at the present time. On his motion it was decided to obtain authority from the ratepayers to borrow £40,000 for .? term of 36)1; years. The report, with .Cr. Daysh's amendment, was adopted. Footpath Wanted. A petition, signed by the residents of Upper Hail Street, requested the Council to attend to the footpath before the winter sets in. They pointed out that at present the path, which was of clay and grass, was most inconvenient in wet weather, and asked that it be formed, tarred and sanded as far as Mr Pattle’s property. Cr. Patterson said this road was another “botch up” of a previous Council by taking over a road that was not thoroughly completed. The foreman said it would cost about £l6 to do the work. Cr. Patterson moved that provided the residents of the street paid half cost of the kerbing and channelling, 1 that the street bo channelled, tarred and sanded.—Cr Armstrong seconded. Cr. Morrow moved as an amendment that the matter be referred to , the Works Committee w’th power to 1 ad. Cr. Hamilton seconded. Cr. Patterson said there was a mo- ■ tion on the books that nothing but, work of a permanent nature be undertaken. The amendment was carried, Crs! Patterson and Armstrong dissecting..
