FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY TdEETINfi. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council was held on Thursday when there were present: Crs W. Claud Motion (chairman), H. Wilcox, J. R. Lawry, H. 0. Mellsop, G. W. Heald, J. Dean, B. Charles, E. C. Cuff, R. T. Reid, the clerk (Mr Alan P. Day), and the engineer (Mr J. F. McArthur). The Prime Minister ,Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, acknowledged receipt of the Council's resolution and returned thanks for the kind wishes in connection with his trip to EnglandReceived.

The Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department forwarded copies of the Governor-General’s warrant, published in the New Zealand Gazette authorising the Council to construct a bridge over the Mangatangi stream and apportioning cost of saxxie between the Franklin and Waikato Counties.—Received. The State Advances Office wrote in reply to the Council’s letter, stating that the Housing- Amendment Act, 1920, contained a provision which enabled the department to lend to local bodies for the acquisition of land (whether with or without buildings thereon) for the purpose of warkex-s’ dwellings.—Received. The Public Wox*ks Department returned plan of Denize deviation, Maiora, for further consents requii'ed from owners of section 108.—The. letter is to be forwarded to the chief surveyor to look into. The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that the Land Boai’d had resolved to approve of an application from the Me Coll Timber Co., Ltd., for a timber floating license, the bond being fixed at £2OOO of two sureties.

Mr F. E. Waite, Bombay, applied for permission to place his fence out on to the road to deal with blackberries.—Request granted. Mr Waite, Bombay, asked when the stone crushed would be in the Bombay district.—Left to engineer. Mi 1 L. Wilford, Papakura, intimated that in compliance with the Council's request he had taken steps to have the blackberries cut on the property leased from the Council.

Cr Mellsop said that a number of the County reserves were infested with blackberry. If ratepayers rec ived notice to cut blackberries, he thought the Council should set an example—On the motion of the ehairmaxx it was decided to bring the reserves ixi line with other properties and to have the blackbex-i-ies cleared.

The Papakura Town Board advised that the Board had cancelled the contract for carting metal over the Hunua Goi’ge road owing to the danger of damage being done to same in wet weather.—Received.

At last meeting a special roll of the proposed special rating area for the Heivetia-Paerata road via Jamieson’s and Schlaepfer’s, was authorised to be prepared and circulated. Since then Mr R. J. Reynolds objected to the inclusion in such rating axes as the road would be of no benefit to him. The clerk said Mr Reynolds strongly protested against inclusion.—Cr Charles said he thought it was a hardship to Mr Reynolds. He was nearer Patumahoe than this read.—Cr Cuff said he thought Mr Reynolds had a good x case to go before a magistrate.—The chairman thought a compromise could be arrived at by taking only a portion of the propei’tv.—Left to Cr Charles and the clerk to endeavour to overcome the difficulty. Mr H. C. Walden, secretary of the Pokeno Progressive League, urged upon the Council to take steps to have noxious weeds eradicated.—Cr Dean reported that the inspector had visited Pokeno and he was sure the visit would prove ; beneficial. Mr. W. Kelly, Mercei*, urged that much needed repairs be made on the road leading from the railway crossing to his gate.—Left to Cr Dean and engineer to deal with.

Messrs Cole and Crawsley urged that Bluff road, Mercer, be repaired. —Left to Cr Dean and engineer to deal with.

Mr R- F. Pugh, Mercer, applied foxscoria to be placed on his, crossing, Great South Road, Mercer, and agreed to pay for same.-—Left to Cr Dean and engineer to make arrangements.

Mr H. A. Belcbamber, Pukekohe Hill, applied for permission to fence off and use the unopened road on Pukekohe Hill between properties owned by himself and Mr W. J. A. Moore.—The clerk was instructed to write Mr Moore asking if he had any objection to the request being complied with. Mr. F. Henry, Waiuku, wrote , offering to supply 1000 or 2000 yards of spawls at T. Wells’ quarry, formerly Mellsop’s, at 11s per cubic yard.—lt was decided to write and offer 10s 0d per cubic yard for 1000 yards, stacked in the quarry where the spawls could be crushed.

The Glenbrook Farmers’ Union urged the speedy expedition of crush-

ing of spawls at Glenbx-ook Had, also regarding repairs to the l’oad leading to the station. The Union also drew attention to the trees on Rowe’s property obscuring the view at Glenbrook level crossing.-—The clerk s was instructed to reply stating the work would be put in hand as early as possible. The matter of the trees was left in the hands of the riding membet* The Karaka Farmers’ Union drew the Council’s attention to the promise made to have the Karaka roads metalled this season, and which had not been adhered to. —The chairman said it was unfortunate that all works in the county could not be done at the same time. Large works had been carried out during the fine season. Karaka, he added, would get a good run next season. It was decided to reply to this effect, Mr G. A. Young, Pukekohe Hill, asked for some formation work to be done on the road leading from Hooper’s road towards the borough boun-dary.-—Left to engineer to ate ml to.
