PAPATOETOE.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS. REVIEW OF SCHOOL YEAR. There was an attendance of about seventy householders at the meeting held on Monday in the Papateotoe school for the election of the new school committee. Mr Frank McM. Waters presided. In reviewing the work of the past year Mr Waters mentioned that the school had been enlarged to more than twice the size it was previously, there being now seven rooms whereas before there were only three. This increased accommodation just met present requirements. Considering the rapid growth of the district it was anticipated that in the very near future an infant department would be required. The school roll contained the names of nearly 400 pupils and the staff comprised 13 teachers. The committee was in a very much better position than it was a few months ago. Slightly over £IOO had been raised locally for the purpose of effecting improvements to the grounds and this sum was subject to a £ for £ subsidy from the Education 1 Department, Mr Waters complimented the headmaster and the staff on the creditable results of last year’s examinations. In the sixth standard, of the 2G pupils who presented for examination 24 passed, 22 gaining the proficiency and two the competency.

The new committee was elected as follows:—Messrs Frank McM. Waters (chairman), W. Reid, George W. Smith, J. McFarland, G. Foster, H. Hillington and F. Leonard, Mesdames M. Bryant and J. King. Mr Reid was elected secretary.
