At Waiuku on May 7 there wilLbe a big auction sale of properties by Messrs Buckland and Sons, in conjunction with J. D. Chalmers, Waiuku. Particulars are advertised.

AH members and intending members of the Pukekohe third grade football teams are asked to attend a practice on the Domain at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday. ,

The choir of St. James’ Presbyterian Church will give a musical service in the church on Sunday eveninging. The preaher will relate interesting details about some hymns and tell how in times of stress and trial they have been a help to. many.

It is believed that Dr. Truby King, founder of the Plunket Society and authority on the rearing of babies, will address a meeting in Pukekohe shortly. This should be of unusual interest to every parent and lover of children in the district.

The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., will commence holding its annual district meetings next month. Over 200 meetings will be held, extending from Albany to Taumarunui. The company has decided to hold the opening meeting of the campaign in Pukekohe, when Messrs Claude Motion (chairman of directors), William Goodfellow (managing directoz*) and A. J. Sinclair (assistant manager) will attend.

During the sitting of the Waterways Commission at Waiuku on Tuesday, the opinion was expressed by a number of witnesses that a canal could not be made through the Otaua unless the bottom and sides were sheathed owing to the. prevalence of quicksands. During the trip over the suggested route the following day, Mr W. L, Short pointed out to the Commission places where they obtained ocular demonstrations as to the correctness of the statements.

The celebrated footwear firm of Stone’s, Auckland, have a business announcement in our advertising columns to-day that cannot fail to excite interest. It relates to a warehouse purchase of footwear actually secured (owing to the prevalent financial stringency) at a huge conces,sion on ordinary wholesale rates. A slight breeze occurred at the sifting of the Waterways Commission at Waiuku. The chairman of the local Chamber of Commerce refused to answer question put by Mr Wily, and protested against his taking any part in the proceedings. The chairman said that Mr Wily had been appointed by several important local bodies to represent them, and the Commission recognised him as such. Later the Rev. J. Fussell was appointed to act as advocate for th? canal supporters and the proceedings progressed harmoniously.

For some time past a number of those interested in the Pukekohe municipal elections have been heard to say that works in the Borough have not progressed. The streets were in a bad state, and so on. At Wednesday’s poll the electors showed their appreciation of the work done by the retiring Works’ Committee by re-electing them. The Works’ Committee consists of Messrs A. P. Daysh (chairman), R. H. McGough and F. J. Morrow. The Waterworks’ ar.d Lighting Committee, consisting of Messrs G. H. Armstrong (chairman), J. H. Keith and R. Bilkey, were hit to leg, only one (Mr Armstrong) being returned. Two of the Finance Committee (Messrs Hamilton and Patterson) were returned.
