FRIDAY APRIL 8, 1921. THE CITY MANAGER.
Experience speaks. During the last six years 166 cities have adopted the city manager government. “The American City” has asked representative people in all these cities for an expression of opinion. In not one instance was a desire expressed in favour of the previous plan. Akron, Ohio, has a population of 208,000, and a reply from the leading editor was to the effect that “remarkable results have been secured.” The secretary of the Chamber of Commerce at Grand Rapids (population 137,000) slays;) “There is only one element that is disgruntled with the new form cf government. It vs conip wed of petty politicians of small calibre, who used to run the city but ate not considered big enough i. > do so at the present time.” The president of the Chamber of Commerce, Norfoiß, says: “Linder no circum.stanc.es would we return to the former system.” And another local citizen: “Politics have been entirely eliminated from city affairs.” On the other hand it is claimed that inquiries sent to a number of cities under the commission government stated that (they were dissatisfied, and were inclining towards the city management idea.
“We nothing extenuate, nor aught set down in malice.”
