BUCKLAND.
A complimentary social was tendered to Mr F. R. Wykes by St. Church and friends on Friday evening !n the Public Hall, which was crowded to the doors, The Rev. J. P. Ccwle, vicar, presided, and referred in eulogistic terms to the many good qualities of the guest of the evening, and especially his helpfulness as lay reader, an acceptable service for which the Church very cordially returned thanks. Mr Cowie then, on behalf of the subscribers, presented Mr Wykes with a solid leather suit case suitably inscribed. Mr Wvkes, In a humorous speech, thanked all who had made the gift for their kind thoughtfulness. An excellent programme was provided by the following ladies and gentlemen: —Mesdames J. Wylie, A. F. Hewitt and Adams, Miss McConachie, Messrs A. Gorringe, A. Jago, E. Pook, W. Ritchings and Davis. Mrs Honeyford gave a humorous recitation, and the Buckland orchestra contributed two items which were heartily applauded. After refreshments were dispensed by the ladies, the social concluded with a dance.
At the annual meeting of the Buckland branch of the Farmers’ Union, Mr E. Pook was elected president in succession to Mr E. Piggett. The memorial stone, to commemorate our brave boys who were killed at the front, has arrived, and is being erected by Messrs W. Parkinson and Co., of Auckland.
