INLAND WATERWAYS COMMISSION.

(By Telegraph—Special Reporter.) AUCKLAND, Monday. The Auckland Inland Waterways Commission comprising Messrs W. Ferguson, C.E. (chairman),* Ashley Hunter, C.E. ; and J. Beggs, held their preliminary sitting in Auckland on Monday morning to arrange details respecting evidence to be given, and to settle the order in which the localities concerned should be visited. There were present: Mr A. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata. who is fostering the proposal for a bridge across the Waitemata, from Auckland to Birkenhead: Mr. House, on behalf of the Manukau County Council; Mr. West, for the Helensville Town Board; Mr. Wily, in the interests of several local bodies and a number of individual landowners in the Franklin, Waikato and Raglan Counties and l’epresentatives of the Otahuhu and Onehunga Chambers of Commerce. Mr J. E. Taylor, of Mangere, who has beer, for the past quarter of a century a persistent advocate of the Tamaki canal was also present. After a prolonged and general discussion, it was declined that the Waikato and its tributaries should be given precedence. The commission will first make a careful inspection of the localities and the parties concerned were requested to prepare to give evidence upon the conclusion of the visit of inspection. Dates and places of sittings wil be settled upon a iit tie later, but it is not expected that any evidence will be taken before next week.

TO-DAY’S BUSINESS. AN EXTENSIVE ITINERARY. By Telegraph.—Special to Times. AUCKLAND. To-day. This morning the members of the Commission made definite arrangements for the inspection of the Waikato. They will reach Mercer to-night and go down the river In one of the Waikato Shipping Company’s launches. The rest of the week will be demoted to the examination of the r iver and tributaries south of Mercer. On Monday and Tuesday next they will sit at Mercer to hear evidence, and on Wednesday will sit at Ngaruawahia. Later they will sit at Hamilton and Waiuku.
