PAERATA.

A very pleasant function, under the auspices of the Paerata Social Committee. took place in the goods shed, Paerata, on Saturday evening last, theoccasion being a farewell social to Messrs McGaffan and Bridge, who are

about to leave the district. In the in : -'idable absence of the chairman J \fr !). Jamieson), Mr A. J. Ross presided. After the usual toast, Mr f?i:ss. in proposing the health of the guests, referred eulogistically to their many good qualities, and made appreciative reference to the leading psrt taken bv them in promoting

the social welfare of the district. Others present added their tribute to the departing guests, and wished them success in their respective spheres. Messrs McGaffan and Bridge both suitably expressed their appreciation of the goodwill shown towards them. Musical and humourous items by various -members of the company contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable evening. At the above function, one or two of the speakers deplored the fact that sectional differences were standing in the way of progress, in the district. Recent developments unfortunately point in that direction. A few of the residents have lately been diligently agitating for a school at one end of the district, apparently oblivious of the fact that lack of something like unanimity has defeated the proposal in the past.
