TUAKAU TOWN BOARD.
MARCH MEETING. At the March meeting of the Tual:au Town Board there were present: Messrs. Dynes Fulton (chairman), Jas. Pirret, G. Lapwood C. Finch, G. Arrowsmith, J. B. Sim and W. Taylor, together with the clerk (Mr. A. H. Tapper). Water Race. The question of fencing the water race was left in the hands of the chairman and Mr Lapwood. General manager of Railways’ Visit. The General Manager of the New Zealand Railways intimated that he would visit Tuakau in connection with the alterations to the railway station relative to Harrisville improvements as soon as possible after the March session of Parliament. George Street Grant. In reply to the Board’s letter asking for the balance of the £ISOO grant amounting to £SOO for work from the Tuakau railway station to the Tuakau bridge, the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, intimated that he would refer the Board’s request to the Minister for Public Works (Mr. j. G. Coates, and would reply again later. Town Hall Loan. Referring to the Board’s application for a loan of £7OOO for the purpose of erecting a Memorial Hall, the Commissioner of the Government Insurance Department stated that consideration of the application had been postponed for the * present. He thought there would be very little difficulty in the way for a loan of £ r ;so for the acquirement of a site for the hall.
. The chairman reported that an application had been made for the £750 and his action was approved. Town Hall Site. On the motion of Mr. Lapwood, it was decided to fix the site for the site for the proposed town hall. An amendment moved by Mr Pirret and seconded by Mr Finch, that a public meeting of ratepayers be held to consider the question was lost. Mr. Arrowsmith moved that the sections in George Street, of. a total area of two acres offered by Mrs. B. L. Taylor, be purchased for £720, subject to the £750 on account of the loan being obtained. Mr., Lapwood seconded. The motion was carried, Mr Pirret dissenting. Tarring and Sanding. Subject to the Finance Committee’s approval, the engineer was instructed to proceed with the tarring and sanding of George and Liverpool Streets without delay. Resignation. As a protest against the action of the Board in acquiring another site for Town Hall purposes, when the previous Board recommended the incoming Board to acquire Mr T. K. Paterson’s site, Mr Jas. Pirret tendered his resignation. Mr Pirret' maintained that the ratepayers should have had a voice in the selection of a site.
On the motion of the chairman and Mr. Taylor, it was decided not to accept the resignation and the clerk was instructed to write and ask Mr Pirret to reconsider his decision. Mr Pirret, we understand, desired that the resignation be accepted. A poll of the electors will be held on Wednesday next, when Mr Pirret is seeking re-election. i Finance. Accounts amounting to £330 3s 5d were passed for payment. Notice of Motion. The chairman gave notice to move at next meeting, that the Board meet at 7 p.m. until the first general meeting in September. Tuakau Domain. The clerk was instructed to again write the Commissioner of Crown Lands asking him to fix a date for the conference between the Tuakau I own and Domain Boards.
