WHITE CLIFFS, MAUKU.

A SUITABLE RESERVE. It will be remembered that a short time ago the Franklin County decided to acquire a reserve and take a toad near the White Cliffs beach, Mauku, far the convenience of picnic parties and those who frequented sea beaches, it being pointed aut that the White Cliffs beach was the most convenient. At the last meeting of the Franklin County Council, Mr. R. M. King waited on the Council with a request that it reconsiders its decision, because he contended an injustice would be done to him if the Council acquired the property. It was pointed out that the Council had decided, before Mr King came to the district and acquired the property adjoining, to acquire the property. Mr. King stated that the Council had done nothing in the matter until he had attempted to do something. He pointed out that the beach was not suitable for fishing or a recreation ground. There was a job to get access to the beach, and this place gave facilities which otherwise could not be got. He was conserving his cwn interests and if he could not get the land he claimed an injustice would be done. The chairman said that it was a question as to whether the Council was there to conserve Mr. King’s interests or to conserve the interests of the public. He informed Mr. King that the resolution would have to stand, but he would take the opportunity of visiting the locality to see for himself, in company with the member for the riding, and they would report at next meeting. Cr. Cuff informed Mr King that the Mauku Farmers’ Union took the matlex xip. It was not the Waiau Farmers’ Union. Mr. King: Then it is a very bad taste. The section referred to is an unclaimed piece of land, containing something like 9Q acres which it is claimed is admirably adapted for a recreation reserve.
