NEW HEALTH ACT.

APPOINTMENT OF INSPECTOR, With reference to a circular letter received from the Public Health-De-partment asking various local bodies if they were prepared to pay certain sums towards the salaries of part time sanitary inspectors in accordance with the with the provisions of the new Public Health Act* the Manukau County Council wrote at Thursday’s meeting of the Franklin Countv Council soliciting the opinion ot the latter as to the advisability of two or more counties combining and appointing an inspector of their own. The Manukau County Council pointed out that the department requested them to pay £l5O per annum for the services of their inspector, but as there was not a great deal of to be done, they thought it would be cheaper and better value would be obtained for the outlay if the suggestion was agreed to.

The county clerk (Mr Alan P. Day) reported having replied pointing out that the Franklin County Council had accepted the offer of the department to provide a part-time inspector for £125 per annum, being of the opinion that it would be an advantage to work in as much as possible with the medical health officer. He also pointed out that the inspector would be under the control of the Health Department and there would be no question at gny time between the health, office!- and the Council as to whether the latter was carrying out its powers and duties under the Act in a proper manner. The Council considered that for the work entailed, including travelling expenses, the offer made was a good one, and also that in view of the fact that it was not intended that local bodies contributing would pay the whole of the travelling expenses and salary of the inspectors, but such contributions as were being asked were such that the Government would pay at least 50 per cent, of the sum and probably more.—The clerk’s reply was approved.
