OF GREAT POTENTIAL VALUE. Those who attended the meeting in the High School last Friday were more than surprised at the variety and practical utility of the classes of instruction to be held in Pukekohe during the coming season. One and all went away with the firm conviction that it would be a regrettable matter if these classes were not fully supported by those for whom they are being primarily arranged. There is in these classes of a technical nature fine scope for the young man or woman who desires to “make good” at his caking or to improve his prospects for the future.
Mr A. F. Brown was in the chaii', and having pointed out the value of education as a factor in promoting greater efficiency, he called upon Mr W. F. Munro, the headmaster of the Technical High School, to address the meeting. The speaker briefly outlined the present trend of educational thought and the improvements in the educational system, in New Zealand that were being introduced by the Minister for Education, the Hon. G. J. Parr. Specially noteworthy, said the speaker, were the laudable attempts that were being made to improve and enlarge the scope of the post-primary course, so that our boys and girls might be better equipped for their life’s work. Mr. Munro then went on to outline the programme of work that has been drawn up for the ensuing season. The subjects are:—The study of English literature (including composition and correspondence), practical arithmetic, the theory and practice of agriculture (including soil analysis and dairy science), commercial subjects, motor mechanics (study of oil and gas photography, electric wiring, ticket and sign writing, millinery, cooking, dressmaking and first aid.
The young- people of this district, continued Mr. Munro, would do well to study their own future advancement. They should secure for themselves the benefits of a course of general and technical' education. Education is their right and- the responsibility- is also theirs to use it.
Questions relating to the courses were answered and the meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker and the chairman.
A further statement and enrolment is advertised for to-morrow (Wednesray). Enrolling at 7 p.m., meeting at 8 p.m.
