PUKEKOHE EAST.
A meeting of local farmers was held* recently for the purpose of deciding on some scheme for eradicating rabbits from the district, as at the present time they appear to be more plentiful than for several years past. After discussion, it was de eided that a general poisoning was to take place throughout the district (weather permitting) on the 28th of February, Ist and 2nd March. A working committee was elected, viz., Messrs Thos. Hamilton (chairman), J. Ferguson, W. A. Scott, A. Mahonie, R. Begbie, W. Appleby, and Lewis Morgan (bon. secretary). Since then the secretary reports having ordered scwt. of poisoned pollard and 4 doz. tins of Toxa, so the bunny should shortly be having a very trying time. Quantities of cream are falling very rapidly now, some farmers reporting being down to almost half of what they were in the flush of the season.
Soft turnips are now in general use for the milking cows, so they should keep the returns up a bit until the autumn growth comes. One farmer put in eleven acres of millet this year, and has already had a fair amount of feed off it, but the owner states it has done as well as he has experienced on previous occasions.
