ROLL OF HONOUR.
THOMAS GEORGE WOODS. The death occurred at Pukekohe West on Saturday last of Mr. Thomas George Woods, second son of Mr. T. W. Woods, of Pukekohe West, and the ridings representative on the Franklin County Council. Deceased was 26 years of age. When the war broke out deceased and his the late William Woods, volunteered for active service, the latter making the supreme sacrifice on September 15, 1916, at the battle of the Somme. Thomas George Woods was reported killed and a memorial service was held to perpetuate his memory, but about six months later intimation was reecived that he was still alive. Subsequently he returned home suffering from a severe attack of gas and ever rinee he has suffered from the effects thereof, eventually passing to the Great Beyond as stated above. He was employed on his father’s farm up Ic the time of his death. Deceased was a typical New Zealander, a conscientious worker, highly esteemed by all with whom he came in contact, and news of his death cast a gloom over the whole district. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended to the bereaved parents in their sad and irreparable loss.
Deceased was buried at Pukekohe yesterday with full military honours. The cortege was fully half a mile in length, residents from Pukekohe, Pukekohe West, Puni and all the surrounding districts, including Waiuku, Papakura and Buck!and, being present. The firing party was representative of deceased’s late regiment, the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, also Auckland Mounted Rifles and Infantry, as well as tie local companies of territorials and senior cadets. 'The firing party was under the command of the area officer, Lieut. A. R. Hatt. Q.M.S. Hewlett, of the 16th Waikato Infantry, and Trooper Deed, of the 3rd Auckland Mounted Rifles, sounded the salute and the Last Post over the grave. The pall bearqrs were Messrs Dougles (2) and Keddie (2), while the service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. S. Nixon. Floral tributes were numerous, being received from all parts of the Franklin County, which testified to the popularity of the deceased and the esteem in which he was held.
