MR. E. PEGLER HONOURED.
FAREWELL BY MANUREWA TOWN BOARD, Ji At the conclusion of the Manurewa Town Board meeting on Monday evening the members adjourned to the 'supper room of the new Picture Theatre to bid farewell to a member —Mr. Enos Pegler—who has been granted leave of absence to visit England with the Dominion bowling team. The chairman of the Board (Mr. T. J. Corin) presided. Following the toast of the King, Mr. Lupton, in a most happy speech, proposed the toast of the town and district. He gave a humorous account of the early struggles of the township and described the gradual growth to prosperity from the installation of a Town Board. •
Mr Wells proposed the “Town Board and Mr. W. Cox, in responding, stated that when he came to Manurewa he was told that the Town Board consisted of three men who sat on one side .of a table and four more who sat on the other and the three ' constantly stonewalled the four. However, those days had gone and he believed the Town Board was busy working for the general good of the district.
Mr. T. J. Corin proposed the guest of the evening, Mr. E. Pegler. He eulogised the work Mr. Pegler had done for the district as a member of the Town Board, and said he felt the Board would not be doing its duty if it allowed him to depart without some mark of appreciation. He had much pleasure in presenting to Mr. Pegler on behalf of members of the Board with a fine fountain pen and the following letter:—
E. S. Pegler, Commissioner, Manurewa Town Board. Sir, —We recognise that you have been a most valued -member of the Manurewa Town Board since its inception; and, as you are about to visit Various parts of the world, including the dear Homeland, we have with much pleasure unanimously resolved that you be given twelve months’ leave of absence from civic duties. We trust that you will come back brimful of information that must prove valuable to town and country. Wishing you and Mrs. Pegler bon voyage, and to yourself .victory in the various bowling tournaments.- —We are, youi-s sincerely, T. J. Corin, Chairman. G. H. Lupton, Deputy Chairman, George Gaellaher, Member, George Smith, Member, W. T. Cox, Member, , M. D. King, Member. H. Kay, Clerk.
In returning thanks, Mr. Pegler said be had been completely taken by surprise. While a member of the Board he had endeavoured to push forward thee district. He was going to England on a bowling tour and would hold up Manurewa while there. He hoped to come back and find a bowling green in the district. Other toasts included “Our Staff,” “Mrs. Pegler,” and “The Press.” A very enjoyable little function was brought to a close just at 11 p.m., one and all wishing Mr. Pegler bon voyage, good bowling and a safe return.
