THE MAYORALTY.

CONSIDERED BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. , AT SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce was held last evening to formulate some plan of action in connection with the forthcoming municipal elections, whicn will be held in April. There was a very fair attendance of members and the chairman (Mr. R. Webster) presided. In his opening remarks, Mr. Web-,-ster said that the present of affairs was well known to all, and it was also well known that there was an almost unanimous feeling in the tow T n for a reformation. He had been told that the present Council was merely marking time until the election. Continuing, the speaker referred to the unsatisfactory position regarding the borough loans and stated that the opportunity to secure money at 4% per cent, had been lost. While he was in Helensville he had read an article in the financial columns of a certain paper which warned local bodies wanting money to act quickly as the money market was tightening. He forwarded, the article with a covering letter to the Mayor of Pukekohe. On his return to this town he waited upon Mayor and asked him if he had received the letter. The Mayor said that he had. Asked by the speaker if he had acted on the advice given the Mayor said he had not. The opportunity was lost, and the borough will have to pay the piper. Several speakers commented on the vacilating policy which had resulted in the loss of the loan moneys to the town. Possible candidates for v the position of Mayor were then discussed at length. One matter which exercised the Chamber was the insufficient honorarium paid to the holder of the office of Mayor. One speaker stated that Cambridge, with a smaller population than Pukekohe, paid £IOO per annum and the Chamber was of opinion that this amount at least should be paid to the Mayor of the borough. After considerable discussion on the selection of a candidate, it was decided to leave the final selection until a further meeting of the Chamber was held.
