YESTERDAY'S POLICE COURT
In the Police Court yesterday before Sip H. W. Bundle, S.SI., Beuno Monheimer, medical practitioner, was charged • with a breach of the motor drivers’ regulations in that be failed tc issue a correct certificate bearing, on the standard of eyesight of an applicant for a taxi driver’s license. The requirements for the granting of such a license, said the chief traffic inspector (Mp E. H. Barrett) were that the applicant’* sight should be normal, whereas in this case the. man, when tested at the traffic department’s office, could not read figure* 2im high and 2sin wide on an illuminated sign 20ft away. The Magistrate dismissed the charge, considering that the regulation* did not go far enough and that it was only by inference that the responsibility wa» placed upon rhe examining doctor. At the same time His Worship stated that it was fortunate that the chief inspector had detected the error before the license was issued, as the certificate presented was. in the circumstances, worthless, and the safety of the public would have been endangered.
