GIRLS SENT TO MILLS (Special.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 22. Is the Minister aware that a number of girls who have been engaged oq war production work have been taken off fame in Canterbury district and placed in employment in a woollen mill? asked Mr* Grigg in an urgent question to the Minister of National Service in the House yesterday. Mrs Grigg asked if this was in accordance with the Government’s pc-licy. If not, would the Minister take steps to rectify the position and maintain the supply of labour for essential production. The Prime Minister, on behalf of the acting Minister of National Service, said it was contrary to- tho Government policy for women apd girls engaged in farming production to be transferred -to secondary industries. The acting Minister was not aware of any cases where girls had been taken off farms and transferred to employment in woollen mills. “ In view of the serious shortage of farm labour,” Mr Fraser added, “ district man power officers have already received instructions to refrain from directing women and girls engaged on ftrms to other employment.”

Mr Schramm; It is the same in Auckland. They are taking girls from, essential industries.
