OBITUARY
MR H. A. SAPSFORD The death of Mr Henbert Aubrey; Sapsford occurred suddenly on Monday afternoon. Mr Sapsford was born in Christchurch, and after completing his education he entered the hardware trade. He was the Dunedin branch manager of Th. de Schryver Ltd., and was highly respected in business circles. He served in the Great War, and in the present conflict he was giving service in C Company, Burns Battalion, of the Home Guard. ( ’Mr Sapsford took a keen interest; fn the King’s High School, and was one of the conveners of the Parents’ Association, becoming the first secretary, a position which he held for three years. It was mainly through his desire to see the school obtain an assembly hall''that the Parents’ Association made itself responsible to raise as its share the sum of £SOO. On relinquishing the position of secretary he was made a life member of the association. He still maintained an interest in the welfare of the school, and up. to the time of his death was engagedin obtaining more equipment for the school’s cricket team. As a mark of respect the school flag was flown to-day at half-mast, while the boys formed a guard of honour for the funeral cortege. Mr Sapsford is survived by his wife and two sons. : LIEUTENANT-COLONEL SHERA (P.A.) AUCKLAND,’ Oct. 21., The death has occurred of a notable veteran of the South African War aivL the last war, Lieutenant-colonel Louis Murray Shera, 0.8. E., M.C., ofßemuera, aged 63 years. Lieutenant-colonel Shera wis the third son of Mr J. M. Shera, who once represented Auckland’ City in the House of Representatives. Through his mother, who was - a daughter of Colonel H. C. ■ Balneavis, of the 65th Regiment, he had a Maori’ as well as pakeha inheritance ’ of* soldierly qualities. At Gallipoli he ' did very fine service and was awarded thtv Military Cross for gallantry, and he was< also mentioned in despatches by General Sir lan Hamilton for his work. In the August advance in France he at first had command of an engineer company, but at the close of the war he was appointed to command all the engineers of the New Zealand division. He was also awarded the military 0.8. E. Lieutenant-colonel Shera wa* not married. MR WILLIAM SATGHELL AUCKLAND, Oct. 21. The death has occurred of Mr William Satchell, author of the New Zealand novel, ‘ The Greenstone Door.’- 1 Mr Satchell, who was aged 83 years, wrote prose and verse in England before coming to New Zealand in 1886, He settled at Hokianga, but came to Auckland early in the ’nineties. The death has occurred of Mr William Thompson Cook, aged 77, the proprietor of the Rodney and Otamate* Times/ During his career as a'journalist he was associated with newspaper! throughout the Dominion.
