CHURCHILL AUCTION

As the time for the local Churchill auction' draws near an increasing number of rare and beautiful articles are being received at the Public Library. A selection of these may be seen- on display in the D.I.C. window. They include water colours, sketches, manuscripts, books, china, crystal, silver, antiques of all kinds, stamps, coins, and medals. A limited number of catalogues may be had on application at the Public Library. The auction will be held on Wednesday, October 21, in the Art Society’s rooms. Yesterday’s contributions include a silver mustard pot (Mrs W. A. Saunders), a French Empire brass kettle (Mr J. Lusk), an antique candlestick, a Wedgwood tea set, a crystal and silver honey jar, a perfume bottle, a silver inkwell and two silver trinket Urnys (“ Anon ”), a pair of marble vases bought in Na*ples (Miss E. A. Robinson), D. H, Lawrence's ‘ Ship of Death * (Miss J. McLennan), ‘Random Recollections,’ autographed copy (Mr J. C. Hanlon), mounted specimens of New Zealand ferns (Mr C. C. Armstrong), and 26 engravings of Hogarth etchings (Miss Hill Jack). The book presented by Mr Winston Churchill to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, which is the central feature of the auction, is described in ‘ The Churchill Book ’ by C. R. H. Taylor. This pamphlet is on sale at Whitoombe and Tombs’s.
