—Vice-Regal.— The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, presided at a meeting of the National Patriotic Fund Board in Wellington yesterday morning. In r the afternoon their Excellencies, attended by Captain H. G. Helmore, visited a , casualty clearing station. The Hon. J. A. Hauan was a passenger for the north by the express this morning. Mr F. Tyson left by this morning’s train for the south. Mr W. Garrett travelled north by th* express to-day. Mr R. D. Halstead was a passenger south by train this morning. Mr W. J. Blackler, clerk of the court at Westport, has been transferred to Dunedin. He will leave Westport oa October 22 to take up his new duties. Advice was received recently that Mr Charles Craw, of Chatto Creek, has been promoted a sub-lieutenant in the Fleet Air Arm. Mr and Mrs A. Houlistqn, of Clinton, have received cabled advice that their son, Gunner R. A. Houliston, who was reported seriously ill and injured some weeks ago, has now been removed from the seriously ill list. Colonel F. W. Furkert,_ formerly en-giueer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, who has been Director of Defence Works at Fiji for the last 15 months, has returned to New Zealand. The chairman (Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.), Messrs J. Price, H. Hodgson (members), and A. B. Thomson (secretary) will leave on Tuesday to conduct a sitting of the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board at Oamaru. Mr A. N. Haggitt will represent the Crown. The members of the No. 1 Board, Messrs D. C. Cameron (chairman), W. R. Clarke, and J. C. H. Somerville, and Mr W. J. M. Grant (secretary) left today to hold a sitting at Middlemarch. The Rev. E. H. Strong, who has been appointed vicar of St. Michael’s, derson’s Bay, has had a long.and varied career in the church. His most recent , appointment was in Te Awamutu, where he was relieving while the vicar was serving with the forces. In 1939 the Rev. Strong acted as locum teueus at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin, while the dean was in England. At that time he was a canon of the Auckland diocese, and had been warden of St. John’s College, Auckland, from 1932-38. He has also held the position of archdeacon of Tonga. Staying at the City Hotel are Mr W. Hinton (Blenheim), Captain and Mrs J. Gaskell. (Christchurch), Mr‘and Mrs A. Henderson (Kennington), Mr and Mrs F. Duncan (Alexandra), Mr J/ Smith • (Invercargill).
