ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
FALL FROM MOVING TRAINi A woman suffered injuries from which she later died aud another woman was injured when they fell while alighting from a moving train at the Newmarket Railway Station (Auckland). The victims were:—Mrs Muriel Steele Mountfort, aged about 42, of Romuera, wife of Flying-officer Herbert Vaughan Mountfort, of Rotorua (dead) ; Mrs Arthur Purvis Smith, aged 60, of Remuera: lacerations to arms, legs, and head, and shock. Both women, who were friends, were travelling on the 9.45 Papakura-Auck-land train. They attempted to alight as the train was leaving the Newmarket Station for the city. "Although Mrs Mountfort rolled between the platform and the train, it did not appear that she had been hit by the train. She did not seem to be seriously hurt at the time, but died in an ambulance before reaching the Auckland Hospital. Mrs Smith fell on the platform. She was treated at the casualty department, and her condition is not serious. HEAD INJURIES. Mrs Mary Monaghan, who resides at 26 F.ecles street, Gore, was admitted to the Public Hospital at 5.30 p.ny yesterday, with injuries to the head received in a motor accident at the corner of Hanover street and King street. SOLDIER’S DEATH. The dead body of a United Nations soldier was found early this morning by a shunter in the railway goods yard at Auckland on top of a freezing van attached to a train which arrived from Frankton last night. It was identified as Private Grady Emmett Bush. Death was due to head injuries. An inquest is to be held.—Press Association.
