Answer to Correspondent. . “ Wager.”—Royal Lancer did not start at the Southland' New Year meeting last January. It was al the Riverton meeting in 1941 when he won the principal race each day. The following taxes were paid by the Dunedin Jockey Club in connection with its meeting last Saturday ; —Totalisalor lax, £1,816 13s 6d ; dividend duly, £1,539 7s; ami stake tax, £2l 10s; total, £3,377 10s 6d. It is reported that Sing Sing will he reserved for the short race at Gere next week, as she is considered to be not yet sufficiently forward in condition to run out a mile and a-quaricr. The following nominations have been received for the Hew Zealand Trotting Cup. £2,750, 2m, lo be .run at Addington on November 7; —Bayard, Bronze Eagle, Chatnios. Clockwork, Colonel Grattan, Husky Sound, Ferry Post, Fine Art, Fremont, Gold Bar, Great Jewel, Haughty, Josedalo Grattan, Loyal Rev, Peter Smith, Pleasant Guy. There was some bad riding at Wingatui on Saturday, and not all of it was done by the apprentices. Several horses received bad passages in their races, but none of the interferences was intentional, and it was not necessary lo call the Judicial Committee to meet during the day. Royal Lancer will not be a starter at Gore next week, and is to he nominated for the New Zealand Cup. He is reported to have suffered no ill effects from his race at Wingatui last week, and his next appearance in public will be at the Invercargill meeting a week previous to the Cup. The Southland Trotting Club announces that, should it he necessary lo run any nice in divisions at its meeting this month, llie stakes will he increased so that the winner of any division will not receive less than £IOO, and the second horse not less than £2O. 'Nominations close to-morrow at 5 p.m. Mr W Swale has changed his plans regarding the McLean Stakes winner, Invulnerable, and he will now bo kept in work for the New Zealand Cup Meeting. Unfortunately lie is not engaged in the Welcome Stakes, but will be nominated for the two-year-old handicaps. He is engaged in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes and next season’s Derby. At the Otago Hunt Meeting, held at Wingatui last month, 6,381 persons passed through the turnstiles, and the gate receipts amounted to £B9O 12s lid. At the Dunedin Jockey Club’s fixture on Saturday 5,574 passed through the turnstiles, and the takings at the gates w y ore £736 Is. At the Otago Hunt Meeting the totalisalor handled £37,640 10s, and at Wingatui on Saturday £36,303 was invested. Owing to the restriction of racing this season, fields in fiat events are larger than previously, and division races are popular with neither owners nor the public. One way of reducing the size of the fields and improving the sport would be to eliminate all horses that, have not been trained or (aught io stand into the tapes quietly. The “schooling list." is not made sufficient use of, and many horses are allowed to travel front meeting to meeting upsetting every field they start in. There may hayc been a lime when clubs could not afford to refuse nominations, but those days are past, and for the good of the sport and safety -to the well-mannered horses a much closer supervision is now much desired.
