FIRE IN FREEZING WORKS
DAMAGE ASSESSED AT £IO,OOO (P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 14. Damage estimated at about £IO,OOO was caused this morning at the Westfield Freezing Company works when fire destroyed the skin-drying plant, which is part of tho wool and sheepskin department adjoining the slaughtering block. A good save was made by. the company’s volunteer firo brigade, in conjunction with a number of suburban brigades. The manager of the company, Air A. G. Bryan, said the cause of the fire had not been discovered, hut it is believed to be due to a fault in tho installation. The damage might have been greater had tho fire occurred at tho height of the season. Air Bryan said that production would not be held up. and the damage would he repaired before December, when skin-drying operations would he most needed. A returned Maori Battalion man, Robert Hammond, who was working at the far end of the plant, felt unaccustomed heat and saw smoke. He immediately rang the alarm, and 21 members of the company’s firo brigade played a prominent part in suppressing tho fire.
